Most people assume a buried dog fence stays with the house. Here’s how moving your RadioPet system works.
What happens to your hidden fence system when you move?
Because the boundary wire is buried at your current property (about 4 inches deep on average), moving the system means having it reinstalled at your new home. The system is designed to be transferable, so you don’t need to buy a new one.
To book a reinstallation, fill out our Repair & Service request form or call us. The form asks for:
- your new address
- which system you have
- the size of the new property
- how many dogs you have
- roughly when your system was first installed
That way we can plan the new installation before we arrive.
Will your system work on a bigger or differently shaped property?
Yes. RadioPet systems are flexible enough to fit a new property of any size. Our systems include containment for up to 1 acre in any layout you choose, and additional acreage of wire can be added for larger properties.
A move is also a good time to rethink your layout. Your new property may suit a different one:
- Perimeter: the wire runs around the entire yard. This is our most common layout.
- Hourglass: encloses the front and back yards but blocks off the side yards, so your dog passes between them through the house or garage.
- Double loop: two wires run side by side, 4 feet apart, around one area only. It’s used when difficult terrain rules out other layouts, when you only want your dog in part of a large property, or to block the frontage on a farm.
Does your dog need to be retrained at the new house?
Yes, but only briefly. Your dog already knows how the system works. At the new property, we place new boundary flags and run a quick training session, and your dog learns where the new boundaries are.

How much does it cost to move a hidden dog fence?
Moving a system to a new location costs a service call fee, the same as changing the layout of an existing system. We don’t publish the fee online, so call us or submit a service request for a price.
Since you’re keeping the system itself, the cost is the reinstallation, not a new system. New RadioPet systems start at $1,950 installed.
Can you move your hidden fence in winter?
Yes, we install during the winter. If the ground is frozen, we lay the wire on top of the snow and come back to bury it in the spring at no extra cost. Your dog can be contained at the new house right away instead of waiting for the thaw.
What if your new home already has a hidden dog fence?
We can service it. We repair and maintain hidden dog fences of any brand, including Invisible Fence Brand®, DogWatch® and PetStop® systems. That covers loop wire breaks, exposed wires, and troubleshooting transmitters and receivers. We can also help move or change the layout of an existing system.
If you’d rather replace the existing system, we offer a trade-in credit on your old system toward a new RadioPet installation.
